Resort hotel for budget travelers, small surf town setting with a wild nightlife – On a beach 2 hours from San Jose, and a few minutes from Jaco, a small surfing town with a reputation for its anything-can-happen nightlife, this hotel is perfect if you're a budget traveler, especially one looking for a bit of adventure. The property boasts tennis courts, an outdoor pool, water sports, and kids' activities, but surfing and adventure travel are bigger draws.

Accommodations: Guest rooms are simple and functional, with tiles floors and white-washed furnishings. Most have shared balconies or patios overlooking the pool or gardens. All are air-conditioned, and feature satellite TV, phones, wireless internet access, desks, alarm clocks, coffee makers, hairdryers, and irons/ironing boards. Cribs and rollaway beds are available. Safe deposit boxes are available for a small surcharge. BONUS: Kids 12 and under stay for free (in room with paying adult and existing bedding).

Dining & Entertainment: A complimentary breakfast is served each morning, and room service operates from 7:00am-9:00pm. The Mambo King, the hotel's restaurant, is open from 7:00am-10:00pm, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner; it also serves all-you-can-eat buffets during the high season (December-April). Also on the premises is El Puerto, a beachfront bar serving beer, tropical cocktails, and snacks, and a disco. Many more dining options are nearby (about a half dozen within a half-mile), and Jaco has a reputation for a wild nightlife, with popular nightspots like Monkey Bar and Beetle Bar. NOTE: Crime, drugs and robbery for example, can be common occurrences In Jaco, especially at night. Exercise caution and common sense.

Recreation: The property has an outdoor pool, tennis courts, volleyball courts, supervised kids activities, but outdoor, offsite activities like hiking, biking, and horseback riding are more popular. This section of the coast is a popular surfing spot, drawing tons of the sport's enthusiasts every year. Just as big a draw as the waves are the landscape's many natural attractions. Highly recommended is a tour of the Mighty Arenal Volcano; several are available, and include hiking and swimming in the thermal hot springs. Zip-line canopy tours are one of Costa Rica's most popular activities, and several tours are nearby; to see the canopies at a slower pace, tour the networks of hanging bridges. There are also rafting and kayaking expeditions, excursions to national parks and secluded beaches, and historical and shopping tours of San Jose.
